Know  Where the Risks Lie

When it comes to a gluten-free Thanksgiving, it’s important to know where the risks lie. AKA Where to check for gluten.

The Turkey

First, you want to check the turkey. If it is stuffed with gluten, it's unsafe. If it has been seasoned with gluten, it's unsafe.

Mashed Potatoes

Next, check the mashed potatoes. Yhey may seem gluten-free but can be thickened with wheat flour, so always  double-check with the host.

Ham

While ham is naturally gluten-free, the glaze or seasoning on it may contain gluten. Always read the label and check for gluten and when in doubt, contact the manufacturer.

Gravy & Sauces

Gravy is often thickened with a roux, a mixture of wheat flour and fat, making it not gluten-free. Other sauces may be the same or have other gluten ingredients.

Candy

Holiday candy often can contain gluten. Most commonly in the form of – Malted barley – Barley malt extract – Barley malt – Enriched wheat flour – Wheat flour

Anything With Crust

If it's got a crust, it probably has gluten, unless it was specifically made gluten-free.

Casseroles

Casseroles are another Thanksgiving food that can contain gluten. From breaded toppings, gluten in broths/cream of soups, to thickened fillings.

Breads

Perhaps the most obvious form of gluten containing Thanksgiving food are breads. From corn breads to rye, always be cautious.
