We all go into the new year with plans to improve but come December do we even remember what our goals were? Why don’t we end our years as we start them?
Show up for yourself these last few days of 2018, and follow-through on a healthy habit you’ve been wanting to build. Maybe you don’t have enough time to achieve anything elaborate that you planned for the year, but taking some small steps towards improvement will help you end strong.
Not only that but it will set the tone for you 2019 New Year goals!
Finish 2018 Strong with These Goals
Step number 1 is to pick a goal and commit to it. Commit to it by developing a plan on how you will hold yourself accountable.
Here are some easy and actionable steps and goals you can easily work towards these last few days of 2018.
- Honor your hunger and fullness cues
- Be Active for 15-30 minutes a day (via physical activity you actually enjoy)
- Be Mindful (are you eating because everyone else is munching on cookies, or are you truly hungry?)
- Track Habits, not calories (write-up a list of realistic habits you want to start building and keep track of how you’re doing. My favorite way to do this is with the app coach.me (I am not affiliated in any way, I just truly love the app)).
It’s important that whatever goal you set for yourself (or decide to uphold) that you are realistic about it. Let’s be real, you aren’t going to healthily lose 10 pounds by the end of the year but you might be able to start incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet.
Remember to remind yourself of your goal daily and ask yourself throughout the day how you’re honoring your goal. This is an easy way to hold yourself accountable in everything that you do. However, this does not make up for not writing up a plan. You need a plan for how you will reach your goal these last few days.
Writing a Plan for Your Goals
Make it visible
Whether this means your goals are listed on your phone background or are posted on sticky notes around the house, make sure your goals are up and visible.
List Out Steps
Make a list of the steps you need to take in order to achieve your goals. This will make how to achieve your goals painfully clear. If you list out the steps on how to achieve your goals you’ll be 10x more likely to reach them because you actually know how to.
Identify & Plan for Boundaries
Make a list of things that might prevent you from reaching your goals. Now that you know what might stop you or create challenges, plan for how you’ll handle them. This will make avoiding derailment and staying on track so much easier.
Of course, these goals and my recommendation to end the year strong are made while also promoting the idea of enjoying the holidays. Don’t choose a goal that you know will limit your enjoyment during the holidays (meaning, now might not be a good time to cut out added sugars from your diet).
