What is Gluten?

When talking about gluten-free In and Out, it’s important we know what gluten is. Gluten is a protein found in barley, rye, contaminated oats, and wheat. It may be helpful to remember the acronym “BROW” when trying to remember what foods have gluten.

In baked goods, gluten holds things together working as a binding agent. It gives texture and chew to foods.

Most people can safely eat gluten. However, some people have gluten sensitivity or celiac disease which means they need to avoid gluten. It can cause digestive issues such as diarrhea and nausea as well as nonintestinal symptoms such as rashes, headaches, or joint pain.

What is In-N-Out?

Additionally, when discussing what’s gluten-free at In-N-Out, we need to know what In-N-Out is.

In-N-Out Burger is a fast food chain the is primarily found in the southwest. Founded in 1948, it was California’s first drive-through hamburger restaurant.

They’ve got a simple menu which makes eating gluten-free at this restaurant more simple than other gluten-free fast food chains.

What’s Gluten-Free On The In and Out Menu?

If you’re looking for gluten-free fast food options, you’re in luck because everything at In N Out is gluten-free except for their buns.

This means you can get a gluten-free In and Out Burger with no bun. But they also have a protein-style burger that comes with just the burger wrapped in lettuce.

Additionally, you can get their shakes and all other drinks. Lastly, because they only fry their french fries in their fryer, their french fries are also safe to order as well. This is great news, especially if you’ve been missing getting gluten-free food from the drive-through.

Gluten-Free Cross-Contact Protocols at In And Out

Gluten-free options at In N Out are great but you also need to worry about cross-contact with celiac disease. Because everything is gluten-free at In N Out except for the buns, the only points of cross-contact you need to manage are those that come into contact with the buns.

The current In N Out precautions include changing their gloves, cleaning their station, and using dedicated utensils when making your protein-style burger.

That said, I’ve learned the hard way to never rely on restaurant staff to remember their cross-contact protocols, so I’m always sure to remind people when I order.

This might look like “Hi, I have a severe allergy to your buns, can I please get a protein-style burger, and can you please be sure to change your gloves, clean your work station, and use separate utensils when preparing my order so that I don’t get severely ill”.

And yes, I personally say gluten allergy because I used to say celiac disease, and people would look at me funny… Once I started saying gluten allergy, people immediately understood how serious they needed to take my food and it’s drastically reduced how often I get glutened since.
